Why I Painted the Ceiling Black (And Why It Was the Right Decision)

One of the first things you might notice about this basement is the ceiling. Or maybe not. And the "maybe not" was actually the goal. This space started as an unfinished basement in a home built in the 1950s. Like many older basements, the ceilings are lower, and all of the plumbing, ductwork, electrical wiring, and floor joists are exposed. When most people think about finishing a basement, they immediately think about covering everything up with drywall or a drop ceiling. But for this project, that simply wasn't the best option. Instead, we painted the entire ceiling black. At first, that might sound like it would make the room feel darker or smaller, but in reality, it does just the opposite. By painting every exposed element the same color, your eye stops focusing on each individual pipe, wire, and beam.
